TAILgate (Transport And Intelligent Logistics Gateway) aims to reduce the total number of UK annual road freight movements by 1.5% (1.5 million road journeys p.a.) and associated carbon emissions by some 250,000 tonnes by 2018. The initiative will deliver a software as a service (SaaS) solution that allows customers to find and locate the optimal transport options, minimizing cost, carbon footprint and congestion. TAILgate members are SaaS B2B integration provider OmPrompt, European logistics interlocutor ELUPEG, supply chain consultants Bisham Consulting, freight exchange provider The Transport Exchange Group, transport and logistics provider DSV, and manufacturer SFS Intec. TAILgate will bring coalescence to road, intermodal rail and, ultimately, short sea and coastal networks. Freight companies will be able to optimise asset utilization and so reduce road congestion as well as environmental damage. The scheme will particularly benefit SMEs who have limited procurement leverage; companies will be able to tender their requirements as well as test alternative routes for ecological impact, cost and quality.
