Company description

Oxford Biotrans is developing enzyme technology that it claims will be able to transform low-cost raw materials into high-value chemical compounds.

Project impact

The company was founded in September 2013 and is engaged in commercial scale production trials for its first product nootkatone, the high-value grapefruit flavour compound. Initial samples were presented by De Monchy Aromatics, the marketing partner, at industry shows in 2015 and 2016. The Company established its R&D facilities at Milton Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire, employing 15 scientists in process and new product development. The premises was officially opened by Nicola Blackwood, MP, in March 2016. Oxford Biotrans has since developed the process further, achieving commercial scale (cubic metres) reactions in Q4 2016. Full production and commercial launch is planned in Q3 2017, at which point the profits from sales will enable the company to be self-financing. Further VC funding is being considered for expansion of the product portfolio into other sectors. The Company has been featured in, e.g. the Daily Telegraph and the RSC publication Chemistry World.

Manufacturing a sustainable and cost effective insect repellent

1 Nov 2020 to 31 Mar 2021

Awarded
£98,362
Total cost £98,362

The insect repellent field is dominated by synthetic chemical solutions that have a high environmental impact (such as DEET). Many natural compounds have been shown to be active in this arena, but typically are challenging to produce economically at scale, and/or do not have the same efficacy. One natural compound is nootkatone, the scent and flavour of g...

"The compounds used in the flavour and fragrance (F&F) and agrochemical (such as pesticides) industry today are produced through two main routes. Either through extraction from plant material, much of which is endangered or at very low concentrations, but produces natural compounds, or using synthetic means - multi-step traditional chemistry that typicall...
