Spinout profile
Company description
Neuronostics, founded by Prof John Terry, has developed patient-specific software (BioEP) for epilepsy diagnosis decision support. BioEP analyses short segments of an individual's resting state neurological electrical activity to provide accurate, objective and real-time assessments of a person's likelihood of suffering epilepsy and seizures. Neuronostics promises to revolutionise the epilepsy care pathway through reducing diagnostic uncertainty and enhancing cost-effectiveness in healthcare.
Neuronostics develops medical products designed to help diagnose and combat epilepsy.
Neuronostics is a spin out of the University of Exeter which aims to enhance diagnosis and prognosis of epilepsy through mathematical analysis of routinely acquired clinical data.
Project impact
Company founded 22nd December 2017. Notable impacts TBC.
Neuronostics was awarded a commercialisation prize from the Epilepsy Foundation of the USA in 2017.
Neurnostics received £503,848 from Innovate UK through the Health & Life Sciences scheme BioEP: Proof of Concept (£344,138 (Neuronostics - Wessel Woldman: PI & Scientific Director), £159,710 (University of Exeter - CI; PI: Professor John Terry)). September 2018-April 2020. This funding has enabled us to appoint a new managing director, financial director and a product development manager. In May 2017, we won $5000 as part of Epilepsy Foundation Commercialisation Prize (Shark Tank Competition).

Projects
BioEP for prognosis: A quantitative biomarker for measuring response to anti-seizure medications
1 Jun 2024 to 31 May 2027
In this project Neuronostics will demonstrate how computer analysis can reveal important information about treatment response for people with epilepsy. At present when someone is told they have epilepsy, they start taking drugs. However, we have no way of knowing whether or not they will continue to have seizures, accept by waiting to see. This is unpleas...
Determining the clinical utility of BioEP: a multisite, prospective, study
1 Feb 2024 to 31 Jan 2026
Our proposal is focussed on Epilepsy: a serious neurological condition. Epilepsy is characterised by the tendency to have repeated, spontaneous, seizures. Since seizures occur seemingly at random, epilepsy diagnosis is very challenging. The electroencephalogram (EEG) is an important clinical tool for revealing abnormalities that indicate epilepsy. However...

ConnectEP: The smartphone app connecting people with epilepsy to researchers and neurologists
1 Jun 2020 to 31 Mar 2021
We will develop a mobile app for people with epilepsy. The app will empower people with epilepsy to best manage their condition within the home environment, whilst contributing to their sense of purpose through voluntary epilepsy research involvement. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, we conducted a global survey of people with epilepsy. We received ove...
BioEP: Proof of Concept
1 Sep 2018 to 31 Dec 2020
Epilepsy is a serious neurological condition that affects almost 1% of the population at some stage in their lives. It is a condition with high economic (£15bn annually across Europe) and social (>1000 deaths annually in the UK) costs. In this project, Neuronostics seeks to demonstrate proof of concept for its lead product, BioEP. BioEP is a novel precisi...
