Company description
SugaROx develops a sugar-based compound that increases photosynthesis and starch synthesis in plants, increasing their food yield.
Work funded by BBSRC has enabled us to discover a mechanistic basis for sugar signalling in plants and crops. Trehalose 6-phosphate (T6P) is a sugar signal that promotes growth and development and metabolic reprogramming through a protein kinase, SnRK1. Chemical modification of T6P to enable uptake into plants has shown through application as a spray that T6P can increase crop yields in field conditions. SugaROx was formed to take forward IP from patents regarding yield enhancement, recovery from drought, stimulation of flowering and suppression sprouting. So far focus has been on wheat, but it is likely that T6P spray will have wide application for many crops.

Projects
Delivering 20:20 Wheat
1 Oct 2024 to 30 Sep 2028
SugaROx is a spin-out from Oxford University and Rothamsted Research launched in Feb 2021 to develop biostimulants to improve the productivity, resilience, and sustainability of crop production. The venture develops single-molecule formulations based on Active Ingredients (AI) inspired by natural plant molecules. The AI in its first product, a biostimulan...
Game-changing biostimulant for UK tomato growers
1 Jun 2024 to 30 Apr 2026
As a result of global warming, heatwaves and record-breaking high temperatures are becoming more frequent, longer lasting, and intense in the UK. The summer of 2022 marked a new milestone in UK climate history, with 40°C recorded for the first time in the country. Today, 20% of fresh tomatoes consumed in the UK are produced domestically. In its Food Strat...

New biostimulant for global commodity crops
1 Mar 2023 to 28 Feb 2025
An experimental development project that will allow our UK-based venture to develop an innovative biostimulant to improve the productivity, resilience and sustainability of crop production on the international stage. We are leveraging over 20 years of British-backed research on plant carbon use and allocation, centred around the signalling sugar trehalose...
Feasibility study of a novel agricultural biostimulant
1 Oct 2021 to 31 Mar 2023
SugaROx was launched in Feb 2021 to develop and commercialise biostimulant formulations with an Active Ingredient invented through a collaboration between Rothamsted Research and the University of Oxford. We will further validate and develop a state-of-the-art technology in one of the fastest-growing segments of agricultural inputs. This Feasibility Study...
