This company was Founded by Mr Atherton Mutombwera, a former MSc student of the DPhil student of mine who was responsible for isolating the anti-HIV aptamer that formed the foundation for the award. His vision was to harness the selectivity, sensitivity and chemical resilience of antiviral aptamers such as this to develop cheap and resilient diagnostic devices that could be deployed internationally to rap[idly and effectively diagnose the cause of fevers of unknown origin. I am the Chief Scientific Director of the company. In our first funded year, we have worked with SomaLogic, Inc, to harness aptamers to Ebola virus and to C reactive protein to proptype a multiplexed lateral flow device (LFD), and are in the process of securing IPR in this space. We are about to launch our second round funding, with an expansion into other critical pathogens, including COVID-19 (nCoV-2019). The basic understanding of antiviral aptamer structure and functions, established under the award was essential for the progress of this company to have been possible.
Too early to claim impacts. We anticipate patent filing in the near future, and field trials to be possible within 2 years.
