Company description

Minviro develops software for the mining industry, designed to help run projects with a reduced environmental impact.

Minviro is a boutique consultancy which has grown from two partners to nine members of staff in three years' time. The company advises project developers and mine operators on how to perform life cycle assessment, and integrate this in geometallurgy to improve sustainability of metals and minerals extraction.

Project impact

Changing energy use strategy and making a proposed rare earth project in Malawi more environmentally-friendly by applying LCA at feasibility stage of project development for Mkango Ltd.

The company has shown that 1) the carbon footprint of battery packs merits careful attention. 2) the LCA approach is gaining traction with the industry after a major mine planning software company, Maptek, agreed to incorporate Minviro's tool in their software.

MineMT software tool to strengthen the UK REE magnet supply chain by enhancing and ensuring strong sustainability credentials

1 Nov 2023 to 30 Apr 2025

Awarded
£226,100
Total cost £323,000

The net-zero transition is accelerating demand for Permanent-Magnet-Synchronous-Motors (PMSMs), which make electric drivetrains for EVs/wind-turbines/water-pumps highly-efficient. Yet, their downside is considerable Rare-Earth-Element (REEs) use in manufacture. REEs and PMSMs are at high-risk of supply disruption against a rising geopolitical tension back...
