Company description
iCOMAT develops carbon fibre manufacturing machinery, aiming to create composite parts the are stronger, lighter and more cost effective.
A revolutionary and world-first composites manufacturing process that places carbon fibres tapes along curved paths without causing defects
Project impact
iCOMAT has created, through patented technology, two prototypes using continuous tow steering (CTS) heads and manufactured a range of components. With weight reductions of up to 30 per cent compared to traditional straight fibre composites, cost and productivity on the curved fibre components have been improved as less raw materials have been used.

Projects
Advanced Structural Product Integrated Airframe (ASPIRE)
1 May 2025 to 30 Apr 2028
New sustainable innovations are necessary to meet the evolving and critical needs of Co2e reduction targets for the aerospace sector and to deliver costs that remain competitive, maintain and grow capability and onshore work to the UK. Manufacturing carbon composite airframe structure today demands a high level of manual labour involving many separate com...
Next GENeration of Aerospace Fibre Steered COMposites (GENACOM)
1 Dec 2024 to 31 May 2026
Development of advanced cost-effective lightweight composite aerospace structures is key towards Net-Zero. Current state-of-the-art composite manufacturing technologies are limited to nominally straight fibre designs, prohibiting full exploitation of composites, resulting in labour-intensive prolonged manufacturing processes with increased costs and envir...
AdVanced wIngs enAbling ulTra effIcient propulsiON_1 (AVIATION_1)
1 Oct 2024 to 31 Dec 2026
AVIATION_1 will deliver structure and systems technologies which are required to integrate ultra-efficient and zero-carbon emission engines onto the wings of an aircraft to provide a significant improvement in aircraft efficiency and reduction in CO2 emissions. The next generation of commercial aircraft will use 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Hy...
SCALE-UP - Sustainable Composite for Automotive and Low-Emission UK Production
1 Oct 2024 to 30 Sep 2027
SCALE-UP addresses the challenge of high-volume sustainable lightweighting in Battery electric Vehicle using composite materials and delivering four innovations. * A lighter, sustainable/lower-CO2e, affordable door, as alternative to aluminium benchmark, anticipating future legislation and decarbonisation of aluminium. * A high-volume, affordable, sustain...
DESIGNING, MANUFACTURING AND OPERATING QUANTIFICATION OF UNCERTAINTIES TO INCREASE AVIATION SAFETY (DEMOQUAS)
1 May 2024 to 30 Apr 2027
The main goal of DEMOQUAS is to develop an efficient framework of uncertainty quantification (UQ) and provide holistic aircraft/ engine design tools (i.e. multi-fidelity, multi-disciplinary, digital threads/twins and Model Based System Engineering {MBSE} or Model Based Definition {MBD} modalities) with the capability to become ‘UQ-enabled’. In this way, i...
ERGO-R ( Emissions Reduction via Generative Optimisation & Recycling )
1 Jan 2024 to 30 Sep 2027
Significant development effort has been invested in the reduction/elimination of tailpipe emissions, light-weighting and the general improvement and on-shoring of battery technology, bringing huge gains and new knowledge for car manufacturers and their suppliers. However, the industry must now look toward a NetZero future (manufactured goods and associate...
TEsting of Fibre Steered Composites II (TEFSC II)
1 Jan 2024 to 30 Jun 2024
TEFSC will develop key enablers for the industrial adoption of the Rapid-Tow-Shearing (RTS), a novel composites manufacturing technology, which allows the placement of wide carbon tapes along curved paths (fibre-steering) without the defects (gaps/overlaps/wrinkles) typically seen with existing Automated Fibre Placement / Tape Laying technologies (AFP/ATL...
ADdItive MAnufacture for next generation Composite applications (ADIMAC)
1 Dec 2023 to 31 May 2025
Utilisation of lightweight solutions in vehicles is key to UK's/EU's 2050 Net Zero. Enhancing the UK's capability to produce lightweight structures with advanced performance and lower manufacturing cost, addressing the needs of the global market, presents an enormous opportunity for jobs and prosperity. Currently, fibrous composites incorporated in a poly...
Next Generation of Automotive Crossmember by cOMlding Epoxy SMC with Fibre Steered Preforms (GACOM)
1 Oct 2023 to 30 Sep 2025
Green mobility is key for a Net-Zero future. Composites are a critical enabler to deliver lightweight solutions with ultimate performance. However, current manufacturing technologies are costly and inherently slow as well as limited in terms of fibre orientation distribution, given that current deposition and laying-up solutions force straight/geodesic co...
SOCA - Sustainably Optimised Composite Automotive
1 Oct 2023 to 30 Sep 2024
Green mobility is key for a Net-Zero future. Polymer composites are a critical enabler to deliver lightweight solutions with ultimate performance. However, current manufacturing technologies are costly and inherently slow as well as limited in terms of fibre orientation distribution, given that current deposition and laying-up solutions (automated fibre p...
Nonlinear Acoustics for the conditioning monitoring of Aerospace structures (NACMAS)
1 Oct 2023 to 31 Mar 2025
There is pressure in and on the aerospace sector to embed sensors in flight-ready systems and subsystems in order that Condition Monitoring may provide continuous and early-warning reports as to the flightworthiness of such systems during their manufacture, while on the ground or during maintenance intervals. Theta Technologies is a UK-based global leader...
DEsign MEthodology for fibre steered Composite structures (DEMEC)
1 Jun 2023 to 30 Nov 2023
Utilisation of lightweight solutions in vehicles is key to UK's/EU's 2050 Net Zero. Enhancing the UK's capability to produce lightweight structures with advanced performance characteristics and lower manufacturing cost, addressing the needs of the global market, presents an enormous opportunity for jobs and prosperity. Currently, composites made of fibres...
