Company description

iCOMAT develops carbon fibre manufacturing machinery, aiming to create composite parts the are stronger, lighter and more cost effective.

A revolutionary and world-first composites manufacturing process that places carbon fibres tapes along curved paths without causing defects

Project impact

iCOMAT has created, through patented technology, two prototypes using continuous tow steering (CTS) heads and manufactured a range of components. With weight reductions of up to 30 per cent compared to traditional straight fibre composites, cost and productivity on the curved fibre components have been improved as less raw materials have been used.

DESIGNING, MANUFACTURING AND OPERATING QUANTIFICATION OF UNCERTAINTIES TO INCREASE AVIATION SAFETY (DEMOQUAS)

1 May 2024 to 30 Apr 2027

Awarded
£295,557
Total cost £295,557

The main goal of DEMOQUAS is to develop an efficient framework of uncertainty quantification (UQ) and provide holistic aircraft/ engine design tools (i.e. multi-fidelity, multi-disciplinary, digital threads/twins and Model Based System Engineering {MBSE} or Model Based Definition {MBD} modalities) with the capability to become ‘UQ-enabled’. In this way, i...

ERGO-R ( Emissions Reduction via Generative Optimisation & Recycling )

1 Jan 2024 to 30 Sep 2027

Awarded
£374,842
Total cost £780,921

Significant development effort has been invested in the reduction/elimination of tailpipe emissions, light-weighting and the general improvement and on-shoring of battery technology, bringing huge gains and new knowledge for car manufacturers and their suppliers. However, the industry must now look toward a NetZero future (manufactured goods and associate...

TEsting of Fibre Steered Composites II (TEFSC II)

1 Jan 2024 to 30 Jun 2024

Awarded
£38,983
Total cost £64,972

TEFSC will develop key enablers for the industrial adoption of the Rapid-Tow-Shearing (RTS), a novel composites manufacturing technology, which allows the placement of wide carbon tapes along curved paths (fibre-steering) without the defects (gaps/overlaps/wrinkles) typically seen with existing Automated Fibre Placement / Tape Laying technologies (AFP/ATL...
