Company description

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a surgical procedure performed to improve blood supply to the heart by using arteries/veins from elsewhere in the patient's body to bypass narrowing or blockages in the patient's coronary arteries. While CABG represents the most common heart surgery in the world, it frequently leads to serious post-surgical complications such as intimal thickening, restenosis, and eventual long term graft failure. Failure presents in 5-20% of patients within 1-5 years, and approximately 50% of patients within 10 years after CABG surgery. There is strong evidence that haemodynamic conditions play a major role in the graft failure. Currently despite all the advances in medical images and healthcare technologies, when performing the CABG operation, the surgeons have no information on the haemodynamic efficiency of different patient-specific 'revascularisation scenarios' pre-operation. The company aims to use the state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques combined with advanced medical image processing tools to assess the feasibility of designing the first 'Computer-Aided Surgical Planning (CASP)' platform for CABG procedures. The company was set up in 2019 as a spin out from the University of Manchester to develop a software for heart bypass surgery planning. The company currently has no employees but represents a legal entity through which further funding will be sought from funders such as innovateUK etc.

Project impact

While the company is still new, the potential impact of its software as a commercial tool could be significant. This platform would enable the surgeons to predict the haemodynamic conditions in different bypass scenarios and choose the 'optimum' design prior to the surgery. If successful, CASP could significantly improve millions of CABG procedures conducted each year across the globe.
