AegiQ develops quantum computing photonics hardware.
Quantum Technology Start-up developing single photon sources for Quantum Communications and Imaging applications
Early stage company with seed round investment and involvement in a number of Innovate UK quantum technology projects. The company is part of a growing supply chain development within the UK. Has approximately 4 full time scientific staff with post-investment recruitment underway.
The spin-out company AegiQ, spun-out in 2019 from research originating from EP/N031776/1, is achieving considerable success. It has now (February 2023) amassed ~£4M in funding from investors and several IUK grants, and is now successfully commercialising its first indistinguishable single photon products (see https://www.aegiq.com/). Aegiq's platform technology enables a range of new R&D applications in quantum science, sensing, imaging and others, and is ready to service this market. The technology will be also developed into a new generation of networking with quantum security, including quantum key distribution (QKD), as well as large-scale quantum computing applications. Aegiq's team is led by CEO Dr. Max Sich, CTO Dr. Scott Dufferwiel, and CFO Andrii Iamshanov. In 2022 it won the prestigious Institute of Physics Business Start-Up Award for the development of its breakthrough quantum photonics platform using proprietary deterministic single-photon sources. The company now (February 2023) employs 16 people and is expanding rapidly. 7 of its employees received PhDs form the University of Sheffield and were trained in part under grant EP/N031776/1. The grant is thus achieving impact in establishing a successful spin-out company and in training of excellent personnel.
Company has progressed to series A investment since 2019 round investment and has a broad network of research, technology and business including work with the National Quantum Computing Centre and commercial organisations. The company has grown to a staffing of 17 in 2024 with further recruitment underway associated with increase investment. There are ongoing formal and informal collaborations between the company and the University of Sheffield.

This project aims to create a testbed for networked quantum information processing by integrating deterministic single photon sources (SPSs) with cutting-edge silicon photonic circuits, both operating in the telecom c-band. Through innovative approaches, the project will enhance SPS performance to meet the rigorous demands of photonic quantum computing wh...

For numerous emerging quantum technologies, including those in the communication, photonic computing, microscopy and sensing fields, a high-quality source of quantum light is a critical enabling component. Semiconductor quantum dots have been shown to be exceptional single photon sources in the near infra-red, but a high performance commercial source oper...

QKD provides a secure method for the sharing of encryption keys. Via free-space satellite links, long-distance key sharing can be achieved and global access to the benefits of quantum technologies is enhanced. Current state-of-the-art technology has limitations, such as the need for complex, large control systems, susceptibility to loss, or a low-key gene...

A wide range of emerging quantum technologies including communication, photonic computing, microscopy and sensing all require a high-quality source of quantum light in order to succeed. Aegiq's goal for this project is to develop a complete field-ready, turn-key solution that can easily be incorporated into a commercial setting. We will achieve this by le...

Quantum information processing (QIP) will revolutionise many industries with applications ranging from drug discovery to supply chain management. However, QIP faces a technological challenge in scalability. To secure quantum advantage and a fault-tolerant general purpose quantum computer many high-fidelity qubits and sources must be controlled. UpScale br...

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) facilitates the secure sharing of encryption keys using quantum technology. These keys can encrypt data for transmission over conventional fibre links across any distance, but QKD itself is limited over fibre to around 150km. Beyond this, 'trusted nodes' are required, but at major risk of creating security vulnerabilities. A...
