Project impact
We have produced a series of reports and briefings which have had an impact on public policy and on social action by corporate actors and community groups. We have produced three major reports for Welsh Government on food processing SMEs, Welsh town centres and NHS Wales. The first two of these three reports have now been published by Welsh Government and the report titled 'Small Towns, Big Issues: independent research report' is, according to the Welsh first minister in Senedd, now the basis for a reset of Welsh planning policy on town which recognises the importance of controlling edge of town competition with town centres centre. We work with housing associations on urban regeneration. Another major report on "Jobs and Liveability" was commissioned and published by Karbon Homes, Newcastle and this report is now the basis for the Fair Foundations" campaign by Karbon which aims to start "a new movement for left behind places" which aims to bring together anchor institutions and local authorities to make practical improvements in liveability. We also work with community groups in the slate valleys of North Wales who aim to develop a more culturally and environmentally friendly form of community tourism. Here we have with UKRI funding provided background research into tourism as it is in North Wales as well as providing local groups with a broad overview of what community tourism has achieved worldwide. Our three Tourism Briefings have informed the strategy of the community groups.
In October 2020 we produced our first policy report, entitled 'Serious about green'. This highlighted the failure of Welsh afforestation policy and brought wood economy back onto the public agenda as a priority for the new climate change ministry. Contracts with Welsh Government flowed on food processing SMEs and town centres. The towns report has been published by Welsh Government entitled 'Small Towns, Big Issues: independent research report' and is, according to the first minister in Senedd, now the basis for a reset of policy on towns. Currently FERL is working on two major projects, one for NHS Wales and another for Karbon Homes Newcastle.
