Spinout profile
Company description
Philip Davies founded Desal Solutions Ltd to exploit high-recovery desalination technology invented at the University of Birmingham. It is targeting markets in the water supply, water reuse, and mining sectors. The spin out initially received a £210k grant from Innovate-UK along with £100k investment from Clean Engineering Ltd, Coventry. More recently, it has secured funding commitments of £750k in its first funding round, increasing its value from £1M to £2.5M, and enabling it now to employ several people including two-full time engineers (CTO and Product Engineer). Though no longer a Director, Philip Davies continues to be involved as technical consultant and observer on its Board. The two main anticipated markets are groundwater treatment and recovery of valuable resources in the mining industry. Desal Solutions is now trading as 'Salinity Solutions Ltd'.
Salinity Solutions develops a desalination system, designed to be more energy efficient than standard systems.
Project impact
Salinity Solutions has trialed its batch RO technology with Cornish Lithium with initially successful results in concentrating lithium brines.
Successful demonstrations in lithium mining, phosphate mitigation, and hydroponic wastewater reuse, leading to commercial opportunities. As of January 24, the company had secured sales of about £250k with a substantial sales pipeline. The company employs 7 full time staff and 15 part time staff, including 4 full time scientific posts.

By 2050, 40% of the world's population will be living in water scarce conditions. One of the essential technologies in tackling this problem is reverse osmosis desalination. Its largest disadvantage is the astronomical operational costs which are mainly due to the high electricity consumption and cost of the specialised membranes. Aqualo, a spin-out from ...
