Exciting Instruments develops single-molecule spectroscopy technology.

Exciting Instruments Limited is a joint venture, built in Sheffield, stemming from the software brains of Bulldozer Limited and the single-molecule expertise of Dr Timothy Craggs. We are a true partnership of science and software, with a mission to help you simplify the process of making discoveries in biophysics, life sciences, drug discovery and medical diagnostics, through the use of cloud connectivity and real-time data visualisation. Exciting Instruments is primarily an instrument company which develops, manufactures and sells single-molecule fluorescence spectrometers.

Project impact

We are currently at a very early stage in our spinout journey (incorporated in September 2021) - but we have already secured international sales of our kit and have supported 4 people working on with us. We have leveraged significant seed funding (£200,000) and anticipate 10 sales in our first year. Update 19-4-24 We have now acheived £1.2M in sales revenue, selling and installing 9 instruments, 7 in the US, and 2 in the UK, and are about to close a significant seed round, to enable rapid expansion in products and sectors.

Update 31-3-25 We have now raised £4M in private investment into the company, exapnded to 10 FTEs, and are moving into beskope facilities, co-locating wet lab, optics lab, assembly line and office space. We have secured £250k in Investment Zone money administered by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA). We have installed more intruments so now have 12 operating in academic las (9 US, 2 UK, 1 EU). We have an established CRO project with one Tier 1 pharma company, and a commercial relationship with a second Tier 1 pharma (in which we are disucssing valuable applications of our technology).
