Genomic Labs awarded £1.49m by Innovate UK to support faster identification of bacterial blood infections using genomics

Genomic Labs Ltd, based in South West England and founded in 2019, has been granted £1,491,850 from Innovate UK for their project titled Fighting antimicrobial resistant infections - A next-generation diagnostic device under the Ageing Society, Health & Nutrition funding sector. The project will run between 01 July 2023 and 30 June 2025 and the funding covers 69% of the total costs.

This is the third time Genomic Labs has been funded by Innovate UK, and this latest project represents the biggest investment in the company by Innovate.

The Project is working to…

  • Develop next-generation diagnostic devices for bacterial blood infections
  • Use genomic sequencing to bypass the need for culturing and speed up identification of bacterial blood infections
  • Detect bacterial pathogens within hours, rather than days. This is a significant development given bacterial blood infections can kill patients in a very short time frame.
  • Prototype a device to demonstrate clinical efficacy and impact of approach
