The quality standards of waterways (rivers, lakes, reservoirs, canals) is enshrined in EU and UK law and procedures are becoming more complex and demanding. Current water testing techniques involve the use of expensive and bulky meters and PC’s which require valuable bench space and science trained technicians to operate and interpret results. We have developed an innovative sensor which can transmit data covering the key water quality variables. Our idea is to develop this further and offer a low cost method of achieving multiple point measurement, which is currently prohibitively expensive. This will enable the cost effective water quality measurement and monitoring over a wide scale and possibly over the length of the waterway. Our adaptable, system will allow all water quality stakeholders to monitor water quality and assess any issues in a timely and cost effective way.

GRD Development of Prototype
The Smart pH project is an innovative step for the measurement of pH in the scientific
laboratory arena and beyond. Utilising the capability of a Smart portable device, the Scientist,
Teacher, Technician, unskilled worker or student will be able to perform measurement
analysis and data capture with ease. This is achieved by the development of an app with a
communication
module which connects to commercially available electrochemical sensors. The device will
be able to log data in real time from multiple sensors simultaneously, without a direct physical
connection. The key aim of this project is to develop an affordable but smart portable pH
meter that significantly reduces the time and cost to the user whilst enhancing the limited and
static capability of traditional dedicated equipment. We aim to revolutionise the measurement
processes bringing the Laboratory to your pocket.
