Collaborative R&D
This project, "Improving Live Storm Rainfall and Flood Alert Incident Information for Urban Areas", aims to prototype an improved system for the local collection and dissemination of flooding information. It will provide improved accuracy rainfall intensity data for urban areas to support improved decision making for future urban water challenges including drainage, flooding and pollution. The project will integrate new locally collected rain data from networks of pole-mounted raingauges with existing environmental datasets from the Met Office, NERC and the Environment Agency. The science will be supported by research into the accuracy of the new gauge networks to be undertaken at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science at Leeds University. The integrated datasets will support a new framework to benefit hyper-local communities through the use of personalised data, crown-sourcing, open data and social media.
