Current passive dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are limited to the treatment of asthma and COPD, and are solely reliant upon the inspiratory effort provided by the patient to create a respirable aerosol. This results in variable and inconsistent dose accuracy and prevents the possibility to treat therapies beyond asthma and COPD. The Occoris technology is a novel, active aerosolisation engine that uses a highly innovative mechanism to fluidise, aerosolise and deliver powdered drug aerosol completely independently of the inspiratory effort provided by the patient. It is simple, non electro-mechanical, low-cost and small - and offers the potential to develop inhaler products that can deliver drug in place of a needle and syringe, overcoming many of the common known issues such as needle stick, needle phobia and the transmission of infectious diseases. Possible therapy areas include: mass immunisation, pain management and diabetes.
