Train punctuality is a key measure for rail passengers and currently drivers have no automatic method of assessing their location compared to the published timetable. The innovative technology proposed in this project is to develop a timetable advice system for drivers which provides a simple update of the position of the train compared to its predicted position in the timetable. This information would be updated via a GPS signal to a tablet display for the driver. The innovation is to create a software application for off-the-shelf tablet technology, such as an iPad, which can be used by train drivers to benchmark the speed and position of the train against the timetable to ensure more on time arrivals. There is also an environmental benefit in the continuous adjustment of driving style; more gradual acceleration towards the timetabled maximum speed or coasting when ahead of time. ©Interfleet 2012.
