As energy prices rise and UK/Global carbon targets come nearer, efficient energy management in our homes will become ever more important.Less than 390,000 of the 27 million homes and businesses in the UK generate some of their energy or manage their energy use. Domestic renewables are expensive to buy and install and accompanied by primitive connection and metering which does not include energy management to maximise the financial return on investment and energy generated.A strategic innovation is required for homes to counter climate change and rising energy costs which embraces today’s technology fragmentation into a central intelligent energy hub capable of proactively managing energy use as well as promoting renewable energy sources to many more households and businesses. Our concept, unique in the UK, is an integrated ‘Smart Meter/Home Energy Management/Microgrid’ - The 'Merismus' - delivering significant energy, CO2 and financial savings. Here are some of its headline features:• 24/7 proactive energy management (Gas & Electricity)• Microgen ‘USB’ connection (significantly easier and cheaper installation)• Learns energy/heating algorithms• Storage strategies: immersion tanks, electric heating• Maximises microgeneration return• SMETS compliant• Voltage optimisation•‘Flicker free’ UPS Microgrid capacity• Wi-fi, internet, mobile app controlThe next step for the Merismus is demonstrator build. Essex University has offered to computer emulate the system via their Post Graduate Consultancy. Funding successful emulation development of our concept via an Innovation Voucher will move the Merismus to hardware build: another step closer to a UK and global market.

GRD Proof of Market
The UK Climate Change Act has set demanding targets to reduce CO2 and other emissions by 34% by 2020. The UK’s 30m homes and small businesses are responsible for 30% of our current emissions, hence if they generate electricity by renewable means, or as a side effect of heating, (combined heat and power), they will contribute towards achieving the government targets. Currently it is estimated there are only 100,000 homes generating some or all of their electricity, mainly using solar panels, with predictions that this will rise to circa 900,000, ie 3% of the 30 million, by 2020. Our concept is of an “active” smart meter, (The Microgen Ready Smart Meter System™ or MRSMS) that would save the extra metering cost (£500 - £1500) currently incurred by installers of home generation as well as providing the “passive” smart meter functionality needed to meet the government’s target of introducing smart meters throughout the UK by 2020. Our meter would be engineered to provide consumers with an integrated home energy management hub giving 24/7 proactive control of their energy consumption and generation. Once installed our technology, (patent pending), will enable a seamless move into microgeneration and enable users to maximise the return from their generators. We have completed secondary and primary research which showed that there is an opportunity for our concept. We now require specialist research to quantify our proposition to customers, in particular to establish how much our concept will expand the market, (we believe it could have a substantial multiplier effect thereby helping the government towards its targets), as well as establishing how to actively engage customers, steer configuration and identify potential partners/routes to market. The PoM Report will underwrite our business plan and provide us with an independent assessment of the opportunity thereby laying the foundation for raising the funding needed to commercialise our proposed technology.
