Public Funding for The Tofoo Company Limited

The idea is to produce a novel high protein food from peas. This novel food targets the meat-alternative and ready meal sectors of the market, where there is growing demand in the East and West. For example in Japan the market size for tofu, a traditional high-protein food made from soybeans, was estimated at US$4.75 billion (2009). The advantage of using peas to make a novel high protein food is that peas have a low fat content, a low phytoestrogen content, they are non-GM and can be grown in the UK/EU. This project will carry out small-scale, non-commercial production trials and will deliver a prototype version of this novel food. The project combines the expertise of the company in assessing production trials with the academic partner who is an expert in genetics and can make available a pea variety suitable for producing this food.
