The UK prepaid card industry is its infancy but expected to grow to £25.2 BN load by 2017 and be 25% of the European market. However, fraud management within the industry requires development and brings new challenges compared to the mature debit and credit card industries. Existing card fraud is primarily focused on ID theft and usage fraud; prepaid card fraud additionally includes 'load fraud'. Managing fraud is time consuming and expensive. At present, the prepaid card industry uses insufficient debit card fraud management solutions, supplemented with manual cross-checking. This project will develop a sophisticated and tailor-made fraud management system for the prepaid card industry. The system will be technically innovative by linking card loading with spend. It will also be commercially innovative in the support and necessary scalability it will give the prepaid card industry. The system will not only harness and make sense of 'big data', but also allow us to develop profiles of card holders based on; customer verification data, online behavioural analytics and the customer's card usage data.
