Grant for R&D
**Challenge Addressed** The increasing cost, regulation and environmental damage mean UK farmers desperately need new alternatives to traditional soil-applied, overseas-derived Nitrogen and Phosphate fertilisers. * **Economic:** Nitrogen fertilisers costs have increased by 80% since 2000, whilst Phosphate fertilisers costs have increased by 70% since 2000\. * **Efficacy:** The average uptake rate for soil-applied Nitrogen fertilisers is only 30-50%, whilst leaching leads to 10-30% loss of applied nitrogen. * **Environmental:** Excessive Nitrogen&Phosphate fertiliser use contributes to the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia, exacerbating air pollution and climate change. DEFRA's Sustainable Farming Incentive targets these reductions. **Impact** On average, soil-applied nitrogen fertilisers emit approximately 2-3 kg of NOx and 1-2 kg of ammonia per hectare annually. This results in an annual emission of 4-6 million kg of NOx and 2-4 million kg of ammonia from wheat and maize cultivation alone. Innovative alternatives are urgently needed. **Solution** Development of a new lower-volume, higher-efficacy, zero-scorch foliar nitrogen and phosphate fertiliser, combined with a unique 97% net-zero soil applied organic fertiliser and soil conditioner from upcycled waste and enhanced with biostimulants to reduce the overall Nitrogen & Phosphate required by both wheat and maize between 30-50% in volume without loss of yield or quality, improving sustainability.

EU-Funded
The objective of LEGENDARY is to remove the barriers that hamper a significant and stable increase of the growing area of legumes in Europe. LEGENDARY has the ambition to develop tools and methods going considerably beyond the state-of-the-art to quantify Ecosystem Services (ESs) of perennial and of annual legumes in different agro-climatic zones. Based on co-creation, LEGENDARY aligns its research strategy with the actual needs. Field experiments will be monitored by a combination of traditional observation methods and advanced sensing technologies whose sensor reads are translated to ES trait values by means of dedicated statistical and machine learning models. These data will be fortified with results from past/ongoing projects. Valuation of the provisioning ESs will mainly be based on historical data, as the focus is to develop tools/methods for the valuation of the regulating services as well as for the valuation of cultural/social services including recreation, education and aesthetic values. These tools/methods will provide ready-to-use indicators to better equip farmers/advisors to evaluate and appreciate the benefits of legumes, including enhanced fertilising regimes, management of noxious organisms as well as recommendations to strengthen crop diversification and longer rotation cycles with crops beneficial for the environment, the farmer and the consumer. A user-friendly Collaborative Multicriteria Decision Support System will be developed, to assist farmers in the choice of legume species and cropping systems suitable for their farm. LEGENDARY’s results will contribute to develop guidelines for science-policies bodies. Consequently, the results and implementation actions provided will ultimately contribute to achieve five of the 17 UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and to accelerate the transition required by the European Green Deal. LEGENDARY’s legumes have the ability to promote soil health and will thus contribute to the Soil Deal for Europe.

Feasibility Studies
AXENIC will deliver a novel small bag format, nitrogen 'fixing' inoculant to Smallholders across sub-Saharan Africa. This inoculant technology uses a natural process to make use of nitrogen from the air we breath allowing the smallholders to boost the yield of the protein rich legume crops such as soybean. Based on the proven track record of the product LEGUMEFiX from the successful SME Legume Technology who will be working as part of a consortium to design and develop the inoculant pack as well as a new machine design, and hence deliver high quality, reliable products to the majority of farmers growing legumes as part of their staple diet. Working with TQC and the Manufacturing Technology Centre (UK Catapult), the AXENIC project will build on their collective experience in machine design to create a first-to market product. Due to the budget constraints and travel restriction from the pandemic dissemination will be limited.
