Advanced Bioprocess Development Ltd. ("ABD") is a spin-out company of Manchester Metropolitan University and was
established to commercialise the research of its founding scientist and Managing Director, Dr Mike Dempsey. ABD has
developed innovative process technology for removing the traces of toxic ammonia that remain after conventional treatment of municipal wastewater. This technology is based on inventions by Dempsey to improve expanded bed biofilm reactor design and operation. ABD has now designed a low-tech version of this technology for small-scale uses, e.g. at caravan parks. There are many such sites in rural areas, which often discharge low flows of treated wastewater that still contain traces of ammonia.
Successful deployment of this technology will help to protect natural waterways by oxidising toxic ammonia to non-toxic
nitrate, through the normal metabolic activities of benign, naturally-occurring bacteria. Successful operation of this process will help to preserve and enhance the diversity of aquatic life in the UK countryside.
