Military users, including deployed warfighters, MoD officials in Whitehall and Intelligence such as GCHQ have critical specialized email requirements. Use of Security Labels to protectively mark messages is key, along with military precedence and other military information. This is commonly addressed by using Microsoft Outlook with plugins. Use of mobile devices is expected to increase dramatically in military organizations over the next five years, with an identified market of over two million users. Android is predicted to be the most important platform as it offers hardware and vendor flexibility. There are several active projects to develop secure Android platforms for military use. Existing Android email clients do not contain the necessary functionality for military use and and this is unlikely to be provided in mainstream email clients due to its specialism and complexity. This leads to an opportunity for a specialized military email client on Android estimated to be in the order of £40m. Isode is developing Harrier, an innovative high quality Android email client with integrated features for military users based on open standards. Isode leads standardization work on military messaging capabilities in modern protocols, supporting features that are currently provided using older military specific protocols. Harrier will support these features, which can be used with servers supplied by Isode to military organizations. Harrier proof of concept work has validated this direction. Isode has extensive experience of military messaging markets and with messaging protocols and security. These skills and use of Isode’s existing security and protocol technology give Isode a competitive advantage. Harrier will generate revenue directly from sales, and indirectly by leading to sales of Isode servers. Projected Isode sales are £16 million over five years. Isode resellers and partners will generate sales of at least the same order.
