GRD Development of Prototype
Corium Solutions Ltd has demonstrated proof of concept for a low toxicity anti-fungal
treatment known as Micro-Fresh which is effective in preventing moulds developing on
plastered or plasterboard walls in humid environments. The inhalation of the spores from
moulds is known to be harmful and can lead to asthma and other serious pulmonary
conditions such as aspergilliosis. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the
effectiveness of Micro-Fresh treatments on representative brick & plaster and block &
plasterboard walls inoculated with Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger in a large
environmental chamber at 24 deg C and 95% humidity. Such conditions are known to
promote the growth of Aspergillus sp.
The
UK is one of the few countries that permit healthcare workers not only to wear their
uniforms to and from work but also to launder them at home; however this could be
considered to be a source of infection. Whilst NHS guidelines recommend high temperature
washing or disinfecting under controlled conditions it is difficult to carry this out in most
domestic washing machines. Corium has developed an anti-pathogen treatment for leather
products that has been trialled to treat healthcare uniforms and has the potential to inhibit
pathogen development in textiles on a long term basis using the low temperature washing
cycle of a domestic washer in the range 30-40 deg C. The purpose of the grant application is
to analyse the market potential for this innovation
