Eccel Technology Limited, based in Aylesbury, was formed in 1998 by hardware and
software engineers with over 20 years’ experience of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
technology and in particular the design and development of RFID reader systems. Eccel has
established a reputation for being experts in all things RFID and have developed hardware and
software for many different RFID-based applications and have helped many companies
produce the exact solution that meets their needs.
This project aims to design and manufacture RFID Bird tags and a corresponding batterypowered
“RFID Bird Tag Reader” for attaching to feeding, nesting and migration sites. The
RFID Bird tags will attach to the bird’s leg in the same manner as existing ring-tags and can
be read over a short distance by the Reader. The tags have to be very light weight and
designed to fit different bird leg sizes with no detrimental effects on the bird’s well-being. The
tags have to operate over a wide temperature range, be waterproof and work reliably for the
entire lifespan of the bird. The Bird Tag Reader will use innovative electronic circuit design
and software to provide data collection and other unique techniques to reduce battery
consumption. The result will be a small, user-friendly and low-cost Reader that will allow
long periods of unattended data collection to be undertaken in both controlled research areas
or used by the general public in residential gardens.
There is currently considerable concern both locally and globally over the reduction in wild
bird numbers across many species and habitats. The aim of these products is to provide
reliable data in a consistent format from many survey sites to establish the movements and
behaviour of the wild birds. The results of analysing this information will allow strategies to
be formed to benefit the welfare and conservation of species, and raise public and
Government awareness into environmental issues affecting nature and wildlife.
