WearON enables wearable/textile designers to connect their products quickly and simply to the web and make them more useful. It consists of a 4-part tool-chain of ‘Interfaces’ that (a) makes it easy to connect electronic textiles or wearables to a mobile phone; (b) seamlessly pushes data streamed from the textile/wearable, combined in real-time with geolocation and sensor data from the phone, to an online database; (c) enables data owners easily to visualise data, manage data entitlement and to make data public for products that are inherently social in order to respond in real-time to data from wearables worn by others; (d) provides vital real-time feedback information on local air quality, weather, traffic activity, radiation, seismic activity, etc from existing public data sources, enabling wearable/textile products to respond not just to body conditions but to the wider environment surrounding the wearer.

The principle benefit of IoT will be increased efficiency of all aspects of society, making more-efficient use of finite resources such as energy and human time, with clear economic, social and environmental benefits. Critical to achieving this is that the information created by IoT is readily available to other IoT applications - not hidden from view, and not trapped in vertical silos. We already have some experience of addressing this problem through our leading role in the HyperCat consortium. In this project we will further develop both the Thingful® IoT search engine and 1248’s Geras™ IoT analytics engine and integrate them to demonstrate a smooth “find and understand” user journey for IoT sensor data, using HyperCat as our lingua franca. Our chosen use-case is to encourage and improve Cycle journeys in London’s Tech City and Cambridge’s Silicon Fen, by discovering, processing and providing relevant sensor data. We will work with others in this competition and in the wider IoT ecosystem to ensure that this work has the widest possible impact.
