GRD Proof of Concept
This application is for a Proof of Concept grant to see if it is feasible to provide instant and ubiquitous connectivity between mobile wireless devices (feature phones, smartphones, pads and even computers) by simply tapping the two mobile devices anywhere with each other. If successful our concept will not require any hardware changes to existing devices; it will allow connectivity independent of operating system or manufacturer. Inter-device communication will be using short range wireless so there is no requirement for a cellular data connection, and no data charges will be incurred. The two mobile devices do not have to be registered with each other beforehand. The operation of any two devices exchanging information will be possible in a noisy and crowded environment where everyone is trying exchange information at the same time. Today there are several ways to connect to mobile devices one of the most popular is NFC (Near Field Communication). Each device must have this hardware enabled and even then it requires that the two devices are aligned correctly and in very close proximity for greater than 1 second (we believe our concept could exchange in under 500ms). There is an application requiring no additional hardware on the phone called bu.mp. However bu.mp requires external data communication (2G to 4G or WiFi) and the use of GPS (Geo Positioning System), and has received considerable press and investment. We plan eventually to provide an API layer to enable other applications to utilise this functionality, it could be used for payment, service enablement, adding people to games, sharing contacts and many more - we would provide the tools to make it easy to connect. It could change the way people will interact and conduct business almost overnight. The potential of this solution is enormous, possibly into the millions of pounds in the next 5 years.
