GRD Development of Prototype
With cars and light commercial vehicles, established data sets exist whereby Operators,
Manufacturers, software and service providers and more are able to converse in a standard
way. The benefits of this data standard are comprehensive. By using a structured
Make/Model/Variant and working to agreed repair codes/times system the data can be used
consistently by many industries for the quoting of vehicles in the sales process, for the repair
and maintenance of vehicles, aftermarket and parts. This makes the whole market more
predictable and transparent, ensuring the maintenance process is as streamline as possible
where robust standards exist to establish cost and time requirements.
For HGVs and ancillary equipment, this type of standard data set does not exist, because
unlike cars and vans, commercial vehicles have different legislation associated with them
governing the build, the repair and the maintenance. It is this type of specialism and
complication that has meant no data provider has dared tackle the problem. Due to the cost of
commercial vehicles and the vast distances they cover, plus the legislation around servicing,
enabling Operators to keep their vehicles on the road is critical and being able to make
decisions quickly and with minimal human input is highly valuable.
A comprehensive data set for HGV’s, trailers, ancillary equipment and more would enable all
operators, manufacturers and workshops to be using an industry standard, would reduce
manual intervention when decision making and generate huge business efficiencies in an
industry where time, safety, compliance and cost control are of the utmost importance.
