Encryption services designed to secure all forms of electronic information are of increasing
importance. The state-of-the-art email encryption products enable customers to share highly
sensitive information over the Internet, without the need to manage external third party
credentials. However, these solutions rely upon security policies to be established and
maintained by human administrators. This is a complex and time consuming process and
therefore prone to errors and security failures. The aim of the Trust Network Platform (TNP)
project is to demonstrate and evaluate various techniques that can significantly reduce this
human administration and enhance system-wide security. The objectives of this project are to:
i) apply ‘big data’ science techniques to provide automated insight into understanding the
trust relationships, both static and dynamic, between the participants using the email
communications infrastructure; and ii) apply natural language processing techniques to enable
intelligent secure email archiving and the associated access/retrieval.
The benefits that will accrue from this new approach are:
1) Users and their organisations will receive more secure email communications that are
automatically configured to their needs and which respond to the appropriate changes to the
security landscape. This will allow more complex security policies to be established and
deployed and for these to evolve in response to the required email needs of the participants;
2) The organisations and institutions responsible for the corresponding security auditing will
have more accurate information on which to determine when, where and how compliance to
the necessary email security policies has failed;
3) The control and influence of System Administrators over the security of the email
architecture as a whole can be limited thereby improving security integrity and resilience to
unintended administrative errors.
