The MAP Project has created a blockchain-based media trading platform. It uses smart contracts to create a secure, simple, low-cost film licencing marketplace. Over recent years there has been substantial growth in the demand for digital media; both for streaming over the internet and for re-use within the educational sector. But, for film-makers and for owners of film archives, there is a problem. The traditional approach to the licensing and distribution of media content, developed in an earlier pre-digital era, is no longer fit for purpose. It is too costly, too complex and too time consuming and is a real barrier to media owners exploiting these new market opportunities. To directly address this problem the MAP Project has created the solution; it has built the first cloud-based media trading platform. Built on blockchain technologies and using smart contracts it revolutionises the century old approach to licensing films. It removes costly intermediaries and simplifies the traditionally complex business of licensing and distributing films. With the secure registration of content onto the blockchain the owner’s IP is protected and the smart contracts allow automated payments to the seller. The result is an innovative, frictionless, low-cost film licensing marketplace. The MAP Project platform provides filmmakers with access to new markets and new income streams. For archive owners it helps them release the value trapped in their film libraries, allowing them to exploit the creative and educational potential of their content. The first two clients using the MAP platform are the British Film Institute (BFI) and the BBC The BFI and the BBC provide HE institutions with a selection of their archive films to be used for educational use. These films are available through the MAP platform with the necessary contractual information for both BFI and BBC educational licenses being recorded on a distributed ledger. In order to deliver the benefits of blockchain and smart contracts to the licensing of film content the MAP Project brings together a powerful consortium of world class organisations with a unique set of production, technical and legal skills. The consortium partners are: MetFilm Production, Swansea University, MOG Technologies, Birmingham City University, CEG Analytics.
