EU production of tyres for 2011 was 302 million units weighing ~4.8 million te. After wear, the weight available to be recycled will be ~3 million te. Numerous tyre recycling technologies and several applications exist for tyre recyclate. However, these are mainly mechanical recovery with limited uses for tyre crumb & powder. Our new tyre recycling process is based on a precision controlled, pressurised pyrolysis of tyres to produce a range of 100% recycled oil and solid products. The process produces styrene monomer; a substitute mineral oil; and a carbon filler. Our idea is to offer the carbon filler as a low cost substitute in applications where there is no need for the high performance specification of true carbon black (produced by burning 2kg mineral oil for 1kg of pure carbon black). Applications include conveyor belts; sleeping policeman; industrial floor mats etc. The oil can be used as a viscosity cutter or as a fuel for IC engines. If we can upscale this new process, and establish clear markets at profitable price points (as outlined above) then we could license our unique, patented technology to enable many processors across the EU to benefit and enable them to make significant inroads into the EU tyre mountain, and to increase the levels of tyre recycling overall. A plant processing 1te/hour could process 8,000te per year, and total annual tyre waste would require 375 plants of this size throughout the EU.
