Aerospace Cutting Tool Limited have developed a new All Electric Superplastic Forming/Diffusion Bonding (SPF/DB) machine construction that offers a cost- effective, affordable solution with the added advantage of increased process flexibility within a single unit. The new concept removes the conventional hydraulic power unit, costly servo valves and controls and replaces them with all-electric actuators, eliminating the risk of fire and operator injury.
The project aims to provide lower cost, both Capital Expenditure and Operating Expenditure (CaPex and OpEx) equipment that will make the process of SPF/DB more affordable for future manufacturers by targeting a reduction in manufacturing costs of the equipment by up to 50%, whilst also reducing hydraulic energy costs by up to 85%. This new concept provides exciting "entry level" opportunities for manufacturers' not only within the aerospace sector but also automotive, rail and medical through increased process availability leading to a supply chain expansion and thus increased subcontract capacity.

BIS-Funded Programmes
Aerospace Cutting Tool Limited wish to develop a new, all electric Superplastic Forming/Diffusion Bonding (SPF/DB) press construction that offers a cost-effective, affordable solution with the added advantage of increased process flexibility within a single unit. This addresses the current ATI Technology Strategy 2022 -- Destination Zero, cross cutting enabling technologies theme, and specifically the manufacturing and assembly technologies strand. Specifically: -
* Light weighting
* End of life recycling
* Waste reduction
* Reduced manufacturing costs
* Reduced process equipment costs
* Supply chain expansion
* Flexible manufacturing system
* Process energy savings
The new concept utilises electro-mechanical actuators, eliminating the fire risk and costs associated with conventional, servo-controlled hydraulic systems used on current equipment.
This will make the process of SPF/DB more affordable for future manufacturers by reducing capital costs by up to 50%, reduce operating costs and saving energy, thereby opening the door for increased process availability leading to a supply chain expansion.
