GRD Development of Prototype
Jemmtec Limited, T/A Magma Ceramics and Catalysts (Magma) is an established manufacturer with more than 30 years experience in the design and manufacture of specialist, high quality, precision-cast refractory components and catalytic substrate materials. Over the past two years the company has very successfully applied its technology and manufacturing expertise in the production of advanced catalyst components based on the development of new solutions for what is a rapidly expanding, high added value, market. The company currently manufactures Multi-Metal Oxide catalytic substrates primarily for the extraction of Sulphur from hydrocarbon streams (oil and gas). When such materials are passed through a suitable sulphidation process they are then capable of extracting Mercury due to the reaction of the Mercury with the metal sulphide. Mercury pollution is becoming an increasing concern, with new emission targets and environmental legislation driving the need for such products. Current sulphidation processes however are extremely dangerous and very costly with only one company in the world able to offer the capability following a recent merger between Eurecat and TriCat. Magma is proposing a novel process for the sulphidation of metal oxides which only requires the use of relatively benign compounds. The aims and objectives of this project are therefore to seek to develop a viable manufacturing capability based on a liquid phase reaction. The innovation lies in the fact that all current processes use a gaseous phase reaction and these involve highly toxic materials carrying a significant risk to both health and the environment. What the project will deliver, if successful, is a trial batch of a suitable Mercury absorbent material that demonstrates the commercial viability of the process in the extraction of Mercury from a gaseous or liquid flow that will make the elimination of dangerous metals more commercially available/achievable.
