This Project will demonstrate a novel multi-pathogen single tube assay that can be operated at the Point-of-Care by clinical staff using a new automated Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) thermocycler. The Project will seek to take advantage of the multi copy characteristics of a universal conserved bacterial gene using Smiths Detections’s proprietary LATE-PCR and Thermalight technology and Enigma’s new PCR thermocycler. If successful the test will, from a raw blood sample, be able to categorise an infective agent into gram positive, gram negative or Candida with a 95% Negative Predictive Value (NPV). Furthermore, it will be able to identify the infection from a selection of the 20 most prevalent organisms. The availability of such a Point-of-Care test in A&E and ICU departments would, quite simply, transform the clinical diagnosis and management of Sepsis.
