Illuminated emergency signs display a fixed message potentially leading to communication of sub-optimal safety information and can be invisible in a smoke-filled environment. The objective of this project is to integrate recent advances in Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and pulsed laser technology with innovative ways of using photographic holographic processes to develop photopolymer optical components (POC) to control and direct low energy light. This will allow a new generation of emergency lights and signs to a) optimise illumination from such sources to meet or exceed statutory requirements for illumination whilst minimising energy use b) develop lighting capable of guiding in smoke filled environments by penetrating smoke c) ensure this technology can be integrated with intelligent signs using sensors and wireless communications.
