MUSO is a technology company that protects digital content for rights-holders as well as providing the entertainment, sports and advertising sectors with a unique set of data, business insights and opportunity to monetise audiences lost to piracy. The company was founded in 2010 and headquartered in London to solve the growing market challenges from piracy and unlicensed consumption for anyone wanting to exploit their IP rights online. Global digital piracy costs the US film and TV industry at least an estimated $29.2 billion and as much as $71 billion annually (US Chamber of Commerce's Global Innovation Policy Center - 2019). Piracy is an activity that operates outside of legal channels it has historically proven to be highly challenging to measure, leading to rights owners and IP agencies not being empowered to make data led strategy decisions to tackle this long standing and prevalent problem of piracy. MUSO's work with globally leading rights owners and IP agencies has led them to identify a market opportunity for a new and highly innovative piracy measurement solution. MUSO will undertake an ambitious project to measure and accurately quantify global digital media piracy consumption on a title-by-title basis in real-time, and across a range of piracy ecosystems. This solution will enable rights owners to deeply understand the global impact of piracy for any given title in real-time, across multiple piracy ecosystems. Using this data they can adjust and optimise their anti-piracy strategy. As piracy demand mirrors legal demand for content, rights owners can additionally use this data to inform licensing and content production strategies.

Online delivery is the key distribution method for media as copyright holders continue to move towards downloads, online streaming and video-on-demand distribution, with 46% of global film revenue and 34% of global music revenue generated online in 2013. However, as media distribution moves online, piracy of copyright content is a growing issue despite current anti-piracy measures, and remains a critical barrier to growth. By 2015, losses due to piracy are estimated to reach 1.2 million jobs & €240 billion in EU creative industries’ retail revenue. Copyright holders are engaging with increasing volumes of data across billions of different channels in an attempt to prevent IP theft. However, data availability falls short of what is needed for effective business & marketing strategy development & policy making, and business decisions are often still survey-led rather than data driven, with big data remaining an untapped resource which could be better utilised to improve anti-piracy strategies. MUSO TNT Ltd, a market leading anti-piracy company, will undertake an ambitious project to use new, previously unutilised big data sets around piracy and consumer transactional behaviour to develop a software platform (Market View) for automatic data capture, analysis & reporting across the online piracy landscape for all current music, film, TV, ebook & software releases globally, in real time. Market View will provide an innovative solution to improve engagement between copyright holders & audiences online, creating large-scale transactional opportunities from copyright infringement.
