"**SIGNIFICANCE**
The benefits of VR have so far only been fully realised in the gaming industry(£9bn) however there is a bigger opportunity in enterprise industrial design(£12.5bn) where it could revolutionise content creation by enabling real-time collaboration and presentation of 3D concepts, all in an immersive setting.
**NEED**
The current 3D design process relies 2D pen and paper concepts being turned into complex engineering data using CAD modelling software. Additional software is then used for rendering and visualisation before prototyping is completed, progressively to scale, using clay or 3D printing. Each step is typically carried out by different teams, resulting in delays, communication issues and multiple iteration steps.
**APPROACH**
We intend to investigate this with the development of a prototype for an immersive 3D collaborative review and presentation platform (GSIP). GSIP will allow designers to capture and clearly present their original creative intent in 3D and bring their designs to life, without the need to rely on 2D representations or physical prototypes (expensive, timeconsuming), and present these to stakeholders located across the world using immersive VR/AR.
Immersive real-time collaborative review is an engineering challenge which has not yet been tackled by state-of-the-art solutions, and only recently made possible through the development of graphics cards(Nvidia RTX).
GSIP will be developed in partnership with leading 3D design studios, Southern GFX, who have designed 3D,AR and VR studios (Sky Sports,BBC), characters (BBC,Penny Dreadful) and objects for global media and advertising organisations.
**OUTCOMES**
**From visualisation to immersion:**Designers can create in the immersive environment at 1:1 scale in 3D upfront, with clear communication of the initial design intent, enabling joint creation of the 3D model with other stakeholders from the outset.
**VR/AR stakeholder collaboration:**Designers can accurately present their 3D models and creative intent remotely to other designers, technicians, and customers based all over the world. These stakeholders will be able to stream all content directly to VR Head-Mounted Displays(HMD), as well as view in AR or traditional 2D displays (computers, mobiles, tablets).
**Quicker design:**Eliminate the need for multiple iterations caused by miscommunication of the design intent(up to 60% of design-time), by accurately presenting 1:1 scale 3D models.
**Disrupt the market:**Enable local/regional UK designers to present and showcase work to international customers using VR/AR, reducing the need/cost of travel- opening up the market, boosting UK exports and helping decentralise the creative industries. GSIP has the potential to make the UK as the catalyst for a shift in the design world."
