Indigo Tree have developed our innovative software to measure the carbon footprint of a website based on visitor analytics and the data transferred for each page on the site. This information is used by website editors to identify where reducing the pages size will have the largest impact on reducing the overall carbon footprint of the website as less electricity will be required to serve the pages to the visitor's browser.
This project creates a model for the website traffic not tracked by analytics, without having to analyse the server log files, as this would take a lot of energy and these files are not usually available to the website editors. We will then incorporate this model into our software to improve the integrity and accuracy of our calculations.
This is important for organisations because as well as tracking their Scope 3 emissions from their website it will help measure the improvements and reduction over time contributing to their organisation Net Zero targets. There is also a direct commercial benefit to the website owner as a website that uses less data to serve each page will be faster which improves search rankings, visitor experience and visitor conversions.
The website hosting providers and data centres will transfer less data, so the electricity required for each website and hosting server will be reduced, contributing to their Scope 2 reduction targets. This will contribute towards the government target of reducing the UK energy demand by 15% from 2021 levels by 2030\.

Collaborative R&D
I am a technology entrepreneur and started my career in STEM as a software developer. In 2002, I started a business building websites for clients, with a clear vision to deliver great user experiences. Today I leads Indigo Tree, a digital agency with a team of 12 and over 250 clients.
Our innovative platform will empower WordPress website content editors by giving them real-time feedback during the editing process. At the moment if a content editor uploads a very large video which is missing subtitles and a transcript, they are making their website inaccessible to some of their users and in turn, it requires far more energy to deliver the page to the users' screen.
The overall project scope includes
* Digital inclusion and accessibility of content: site-wide reporting functionality to give users immediate feedback on the content they're adding to their site
* Media Optimisation: reducing bandwidth and energy requirements for running the website calculating the estimated CO2 impact of changes to the website
* Client support and training: for content editors with a range of digital literacy and content editing knowledge, experience and requirements
Indigo Tree will also benefit from advice, support and funding for our marketing and product launch. This will enable us to promote our platform to the widest possible SME audience. We expect to gain new clients more quickly than we would be able to achieve otherwise. This is an exciting opportunity for us to have a much larger social and environmental impact than we originally anticipated.
I am also looking forward to taking advantage of this award by talking to young people about how exciting and relevant STEM is to our world, and how their personal values can influence their future careers in STEM to benefit society and the environment.
