PEEL-IT is an innovative technology for the packaging of paint, however the packaging solution is equally appropriate for other industrial products such as liquids, gels and pastes which are supplied in pots or pails. There is currently a major problem with the disposal of paint containers due to:- i) waste paint ii) contamination of the packaging. After use paint tins are contaminated with waste paint, cannot be treated through the normal waste streams and need be treated, recycled or disposed of in specialist centres. Unfortunately due to the cost oof cleaning and recycling over 95% of all paint tins are not recycled and end up going to landfill. PEEL-IT is a packaging technology comprising a 3D outer pot incorporating a thin plastic film pouch which is filled with paint. After use the consumer can separate the film pouch from the outer paper pot. The Peel-it outer pot is made from recycled cardboard which can be readily recycled in normal waste streams. By using packaging with a separate barrier film the major issues with conventional packaging is eliminated. No more bulky, empty, contaminated containers going to landfill, simply a thin film bag to be disposed of plus a recyclable cardboard container. The main innovations relate to i) high speed application of the film; ii) ensuring the film closely follows the contours of the container; iii) the application of a low tack adhesive between the film & container; iv) the easy removal of the film pouch by the consumer; v) the incorporation of a resealable lid into the paint pot. The main objectives are: i) TECHNICAL – to develop a high speed paint packaging solution; ii) ENVIRONMENTAL – to reduce the environmental impact by reducing waste & increasing the recycling of containers; iii) COMMERCIAL – to manufacture a solution at an equivalent/lower cost price than current packaging methods. iv) SOCIAL – to change consumer behavior and encourage them to recycle paint and packaging.
