Individual desks in offices, occupied on average only 50% of the time, are some of the most poorly utilised resources deployed in organisations today. When underutilised buildings are open they are conditioned, lit, and powered; representing not only wasted profits but also low environmental stewardship.
Space utilisation data enables organisations to increase the productivity and sustainability of their space assets.
Our Workplace INSIGHT Office Space Utilisation Monitoring Platform measures the intensity with which desk spaces in offices are used. The platform reports out real-time and historical utilisation data and supply models via a web portal, supporting Real Estate resource teams in developing more responsive and less wasteful workplace environments.
We want to develop a mobile phone app that monitors space utilisation and provides end-users real-time access to the information to maximise their productivity and empower them to more effectively use organisational space resources.
Our phone application will use mobile phone GPS’s to identify staffs’ locations inside office buildings (i.e. at desks; in meeting rooms, in quiet rooms, and in social spaces) over the working day. The app will allow end-users to in real-time locate colleagues or teams, and identify available collaboration spaces and quiet rooms.
The data will also become the basis for modelling the financial losses and environmental costs borne through under-utilisation. The information will galvanise attention on under-utilisation’s significant costs helping to accelerate the adoption of agile and more environmentally sustainable workplace occupancy approaches inside organisations.
