Collaborative R&D
World Corrosion Organization estimates the annual cost of corrosion to be €1.3-1.4 trillion (3.1-3.5% of world GDP). According to Vanson-Bourne-2017 study, 82% of companies worldwide have experienced at least one unplanned downtime outage in a span of 3years. All sectors require reduced non-productive time and improved workflow efficiency. Covid-19 has exacerbated this and according to a Rystad Energy impact analysis severe spending cuts and Covid-19 will see O&M spend in UK fall to $2.9 billion, the lowest level since 1990\. This leads to an urgent need for technologies that enable lifetime extension , remote working and sustained performance. We aim to develop 5G digital-twin hardware and software providing continuous feedback on generalized corrosion extant in pipes based through 5G links with miniaturised sensors pulsed with AC current that, when placed on the corrosion susceptible surface, capture any Magnetic Flux Leakage and links with asset integrity assessment software.. It will enable the integration of 1\. Asset integrity standards with 2\. NDT thickness mapping, all together into 3\. Digitally interactive platform with prediction modelling and smart display in real-time. A [report from PSB Research][0], which surveyed over 3,500 people including business decision leaders, analysts and technologists, found that 91% expect new 5G based products and services , yet to be invented. 5G digitisation will open viable opportunities for remote digital-twins of high sustainability, and will boost all sectors with unexpected demand increase. DeliveryDay

Feasibility Studies
DeliveryDay revolutionises how the needs of rural communities are served. At a time where mobility is limited, we face an uncertain future whereby electing to leave home to shop becomes less desirable. Our belief is that independent retailers should have the same infrastructure supermarkets have available and consumers should have the freedom of choice wherever they live. In our view no one should be left behind. DeliveryDay is a marketplace where named, reputable retailers are connected with consumers. Consumers have a platform with the convenience of an Online supermarket, being able to shop for household essentials and food from specialist retailers arriving in a single delivery. Choice and quality remain but with the positive societal impact of shopping local. We envisage hospitality businesses, such as restaurants and café's that are currently unable to open would be able to repurpose their kitchens. Through creating restaurant quality ready meals for home delivery, they can pivot to see out the crisis securing jobs and venues for when social mobility returns. DeliveryDay is unique in prioritising the needs of rural residents. Playing to the strengths of community, our ambition is that neighbourhoods and villages coordinate delivery slots to reduce the number of vehicles required to service demand. The requirements of less able neighbours, the elderly for example are looked after by engaged members of the community. We're seeing this happen organically during these difficult times, there is no reason this shouldn't become a new standard. Delivery is made by a named, vetted, and graded community of drivers. We will mobilise currently underutilised couriers and taxis, creating new jobs in the rural communities we serve. Efficiency and cost control create a more viable business model. Deliveries are optimised to reduce both the number of stops being made and the distance covered between stops. DeliveryDay is the sustainable alternative to big box retail. DeliveryDay puts the convenience and variety currently limited to urban areas in a rural context. DeliveryDay brings communities together and makes them more liveable: * The convenience of online supermarket shopping with the variety of shopping local; * Reduces the pressure on scarce resources while increasing utilisation where capacity is available; * Brings communities together and creates a healthier environment by reducing the number of delivery vehicles in residential areas.

A novel non-destructive testing training system based on wireless probe tracking (TrainNDT)

Collaborative R&D
Non-destructive testing (NDT) is essential for ensuring and maintaining the integrity of structures and systems from aircraft to power stations. NDT operators are trained by practising on specimens with real or artificial flaws. These samples can be rare and/or expensive. For training at clients’ premises, NDT trainers must carry samples to the training location. The shear bulk and weight of the samples turns the provision of training into a major logistical exercise, and in some cases makes it impractical. This project will develop a new system which uses real data to provide an NDT experience indistinguishable from the real one, but without the need for the test sample. The system integrates wireless position sensors, gyroscopic orientation, camera input and load sensing into a hand-held probe. TrainNDT will develop an integrated sensor platform and construct the virtual environment based on real test data from well-defined samples with a range of defects. Software will relate the recorded NDT data to the real-time probe position, orientation, and pressure to output a signal to the trainee as if they were testing the real sample. Benefits include: the ability to carry out training anywhere in the world without the need for costly transportation of test specimens; availability of a much wider variety of virtual test specimens; and the ability to vary the training programme at short notice simply by downloading a new dataset. The system can provide automated checks and feedback on the trainee’s probe movements based on actual movements, adding value to the training experience.
