Collaborative R&D
Lone Worker Protection is a corporate responsibility for all companies under the Corporate Manslaughter act. Protection for staff like nurses and estate agents is usually provided by a BS8484 compliant lone worker device which will automatically connect the worker to an Alarm Response Centre (ARC) when an incident occurs. To date, the way a worker initiates a duress alert is by a physical press-button. For a delivery driver raising a covert alert in this way may not always be practical or safe. Protrack aims to add an innovative hands-free alert initially to empower and protect delivery drivers using their Biostart(tm) theft security solution. The project aims to investigate new hands-free technology and if successful will offer to licence the technology to the lone worker market.

Study
This project fully addresses the IUK scope for a Smart project by providing an significant improvement to a market security need, which will lead to more resilience, secure and smarter e-commerce delivery through the use of modern sensors, and connected vehicles. Protrack have a commercially active tracking system with a strong customer base. This project seeks to develop and add new functionality to address a costly industry need among delivery fleet operators. The system will make use of the existing infrastructure used by telematics systems in terms of the connectivity between vehicle and the management team at base. The product will support the one of the main benefits of telematics systems which is to combat the risk of theft. The solution proposed will use innovative techniques to achieve increased security and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of fleet operators internationally. In addition, there are important benefits for the community in terms of reducing environmental pollution. Overall the project will deliver a new and much sought after product to the international transport fleet market.

GRD Development of Prototype
The countries infrastructure for water, electricity, rail and telephone are protected in rural areas by over 1M padlocks. Unauthorised access to this infrastructure could remain undetected for days or weeks. The remoteness of the sites often makes guarding by patrol impossible. In these days of a heightened state of alert this could be a risk waiting to happen. Management of keys for this infrastructure is notoriously difficult. Bunches of keys are regularly lost or worse still stolen making the risk of theft or water pollution made difficult to attribute. This project aims to reduce this risk to the nation by developing an electronic padlock that can raise an alarm when disturbed. In addition the access code can be changed at a moments notice or as soon as the pin is compromised by a staff leaver. The ability to control and monitor what’s happening to critical infrastructure is seen by the industry as a major breakthrough for security. With the advent of the Internet of Things the ability to link an incursion or break in to other security intelligence systems will make tracking and detection of intruders more likely. This project makes use of IoT technology to ensure future connectivity is a given. Protrack will use a new patented to build in the tamper alert functionality that will open up new horizons unobtainable by conventional dumb locks. The project will also address the wider integration of security systems to the Smart City.

Protrack Solutions Limited has developed a new patent pending "intelligent padlock" that will report its GPS location in real time whenever it is locked, unlocked or tampered with. With an electronic keypad each user has their own individual pin code to identify who is using the device. The software programmes and apps required for administration and control of the locks has been awarded funding via Innovation vouchers.
