Printed photonic materials for functional optical coatings

Feasibility Studies
ilumink is developing printable photonic technology with applications in areas ranging from authentication and sensing through to active laser sources. Optical filters and coatings are used in a wide and diverse range of markets, from OEM optical components through to architectural and automotive glass, for example.
The goal of this feasibility project is to show, practically, how a range of advanced optical filters could be created via a fundamentally different approach to conventional processing i.e. by direct printing of such elements. Standard approaches use a vacuum deposition process which imposes restrictions on the size, cost and functionality of such coatings. Not only will direct printing of equivalent elements address many of these shortcomings, it will potentially create new applications and markets for functional optical coatings.
