An Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is a form of heat engine, which provides shaft work as the
useful output from lower grade heat sources. Its purpose is to take advantage of low grade
waste heat from industrial processes and renewable heat sources to generate further quantities
of electricity or useful shaft work. However most ORCs include an electromechanical pump
that reduces the net efficiency, which results in them being traditionally rejected as viable.
ORC Innovations (ORCIL) has noted this inefficiency and devised a pump, Thermaflex,
which utilises thermal expansion of a working fluid and facilitates complete conversion of
waste heat within ORCs.
