Company description

Upside has a cloud service which enables households and small businesses to get paid to reduce their energy usage at peak times. This will help reduce the cost of energy in the UK while also reducing the environmental impact of energy generation.

Upside was created for the Nesta Dynamic Demand Challenge in London, October 2013. As one of five finalists from a field of more than seventy Hackathon entries, Upside found a way to reduce energy costs and environmental impacts. At peak times, the electricity grid runs dangerously short of capacity. In order to meet demand, it turns on all its oldest, dirtiest, most expensive power stations. Upside has found a cheaper and greener way, by paying people to not use electricity at peak times.

Project impact

During my EPSRC fellowship I partnered with Upside to help them build their cloud service. This partnership was formalised by a linked EPSRC-Innovate UK grant of £472,388 (or £829,488 including in-kind contributions) which funded an 18 month pilot project for the Upside business. I was principal investigator on the EPSRC part of the grant (£47,463). This partnership is described at http://upsideenergy.co.uk/2016/10/19/upside-delivers-successful-innovate-uk-project/

The CO2 prediction and stochastic optimal control algorithms which the research produced helped the company to develop.
