Sleep is vital for children's behaviour and ability to learn. Every parent understands how hard it can be to get their child off to sleep at night and have them stay asleep for a good night’s rest. Overstimulation from our screen and technology heavy world results in restlessness and tantrums on having to miss out. How can we help children to switch off? Can technology play a positive role?
ZubZub can help children wind down through the phenomenon of heart entrainment, people's natural synchronisation with external rhythms. It is an effect that has been observed powerfully between mother and child. Music works in a similar way, with downbeat music calming us and altering our physiological response. ZubZub works like music but uses a tactile stimulus, rather than an audio one. This means that it can work without sound and in a more controllable way.
ZubZub will be a connected toy which the child wears and that provides a gentle calming rhythm. It can be based on their resting heart rate or that of their parent, which will be read via heart rate sensors. A feedback loop between their own heart rate and the rhythm from ZubZub can gradually reduce their rate. It slows them down and calms them, so you can get them ready for bed and off to sleep more easily.

"doppel is a wearable device that improves your capacity to manage the pressures of time and stress in your daily life. It enables you to become more alert or to relax, without drugs such as caffeine or alcohol, or time-consuming methods such as meditation. It does this through the phenomenon of heart rate entrainment by which our heart rate can synch up with an external beat. We created a new way of achieving this effect, to encourage the user to respond and so stimulate or relax them. The effect is similar to that of listening to upbeat music to wake up or chilled out music to relax but without the associated distraction, giving the user control over how they feel and perform.
We have so far tested people in a controlled environment and have achieved positive qualitative and quantitative results. We will be undertaking further, independent testing of doppel before developing it for market and launching in 2015.
We see doppel as the first of a new breed of wearable technology that gives a tangible benefit to the person wearing it. We do not believe that the future of wearables will be flashing lights and graphs of stats, but rather a softer technology that lives symbiotically with us and helps us to be more of the person we want to be."

Empathic Wearable Technology
doppel is a wearable electronic device that improves our capacity to manage the pressures of
time and stress in our daily life. It enables us to become more alert or to relax, without having
to turn to caffeine, sugar or alcohol, or time-consuming methods such as meditation. It does
this through the phenomenon of heart rate entrainment by which our heart rate can speed up or
slow down to match an external rythm. We created a new way of achieving an effect similar
to that of listening to upbeat music to wake up or slow music to wind down. With no
distraction, the user gains control over how they feel and perform.
Through doppel’s novel approach, there is an exciting opportunity to exploit the potential of
two massively expanding markets: wearables and mindfulness, worth $14bn and $27bn
respectively, to create a new crossover segment. Unlike the current wearable technology
offerings, doppel can have a tangible effect on the person wearing it to help them feel better
and take more control over their lives.
We have already tested people in a controlled environment with very positive qualitative and
quantitative results and have a patent pending on what we have discovered. The aim of this
project is to determine the correct target segment for doppel so that we can develop the
technology and the product accordingly.
