Company description
Added Scientific provides a range of services related to 3D printing, including consultancy, R&D, and design.
The academics involved in the EPSRC Centre identified a requirement to meet the needs of potential and active users of Additive Manufacturing technology toward building capability and understanding in this rapidly emerging field. To address this need they have spun out a commercial consultancy business in June 2015. With a collective 70 years of professional experience in 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing between them, the founders of Added Scientific share a philosophy of bringing the highest standards of science and engineering to bear on the development and understanding of 3D printing for companies interested in how to best to implement the technology. The team provides consultancy on the future of 3D Printing machinery and techniques, on how to develop materials for Additive Manufacturing, offers services for the design of innovative products and the development of design tools. Added Scientific and provides know how and training so that companies can understand the science behind Additive Manufacturing processes and best exploit them for their business. Effectively, the goal of Added Scientific is to support industries keen to adopt and exploit one of the key technologies of the 21st Century.
Project impact
Added Scientific offers services in four distinct fields to its customers: -Facilitating understanding and training: Added Scientific provides technical reports and state of the art reviews for industry and government to enable long term strategic planning and technical roadmapping, coupled with performing comprehensive business analysis and developing the skills and working practises required. -Developing-on existing Additive Manufacturing equipment or bespoke system configurations: Added Scientific provides expertise in optimizing established processes, such as Laser Sintering, for specific materials and applications and in developing novel processes, such as multi-material and multi-functional ink jet printing. -Materials development and characterization: Added Scientific has considerable expertise in the processing of a wide range of materials, from high performance alloys for the aerospace industry to biological and pharmaceutical materials. Added Scientific can help develop and evaluate new materials that are optimized for specific additive manufacturing processes and their end-use applications. Design and design tools for next generation products: Added Scientific provides expertise in developing new design and optimization methods specifically for Additive Manufacturing design and also in the effective use of commercial design software.

Projects
Spacer production scale-up via proprietary 3D-additive manufacturing for industrial desalination
1 Sep 2023 to 28 Feb 2025
Water filtration for desalination and other applications supports net zero and resource efficiency in supply chains and manufacturing processes. The global membrane filtration market is ~$25bn (Verified Market Research 2019) but a key problem is that filtration is energy intensive, especially if flow pressure drops or biofouling occurs. For instance, desa...
University of Nottingham and Added Scientific Limited KTP 22_23 R2
15 Jun 2023 to 15 Oct 2025
To develop a new 3D ink-jet printing-based approach for the production of silicone materials (high temperature, high elongation and biocompatible), enabling 3D printed products across a wide variety of sectors.
Printed Pills: Inkjet printing for pharmaceutical applications
1 Mar 2018 to 31 Mar 2019
Additive Manufacturing (aka 3D Printing) offers the pharmaceutical industry significant opportunities to create novel products with unique benefits for patients. However, there is a major challenge in demonstrating the viability and scalability of using ink jet printheads. This project aims to overcome these challenges, and build confidence in the potenti...
OPTAMOT: Optimised Designs for Additively Manufactured Magneto Optical Traps
1 Oct 2017 to 31 Dec 2018
Quantum devices will have a profound impact on society if they can be made smaller, cheaper and less power intensive; at present they are large pieces of laboratory equipment with few industrial applications due to their size and cost. This project will demonstrate the feasibility of using Additive Manufacturing (AM) to produce components for quantum devi...
Customisable 3D Glass Laser-Sintered Structures, “3D GLaSS”
1 Sep 2017 to 31 May 2019
The Customisable 3D-Glass-Laser-Sintered-Structures project, "3D GLaSS" project will bring together the complete supply chain (material supplier, Additive Manufacturing (AM) equipment manufacturer, software developers, end-users of AM technology and their customers) to demonstrate the technical feasibility of a new (patented) glass-based additive manufact...
Enabling Functional Additive Manufacturing with Novel Large Format Printers
1 Sep 2017 to 30 Jun 2019
This project will create the largest 3D printer of its type ever made, enabling high speed production of multiple items at low cost. This printer will exploit technology that allows the use of normal LCD screens to cure successive layers of resin, building up the 3D object more quickly and energy efficiently than competitive technologies. LCD screens have...
Functional Lattices for Automotive Components (FLAC)
1 Jul 2016 to 30 Jun 2019
Vehicle efficiency, regardless of the powertrain type, can be increased through several strategies, including reducing weight, aerodynamic drag, reduction in rolling resistance and powertrain efficiency. Out of all, weight reduction is considered to have the greatest potential to increase vehicle efficiency and thus to reduce the CO2 emissions. The object...
