Zapinamo – Affordable, future-proof, rapid-charging infrastructure for electric freight vehicles

to
Collaborative R&D
Urban freight transport makes up 20–40% of all road journeys but contributes 40–50% of local air pollution. Outdoor air pollution is contributing to about 40,000 early deaths a year in the UK, 9,416 in London alone. EVs are well suited for urban environments; they produce zero emissions at point of use and less noise pollution compared with gasoline powered vehicles. However, the growth of charging infrastructure in the UK has not kept the same momentum as vehicle development and threatens the widespread uptake of EVs, particularly for commercial freight operators, who are largely dependent on grid supply. With support from Warwick Manufacturing Group, we are CHANGING THE WAY WE CHARGE ELECTRIC VEHICLES. We are building movable, connected, power-boosting EV charging infrastructure. Our solution overcomes all charging infrastructure hurdles, enabling widespread EV uptake. We will trial our technology with Farmdrop, London's first all-electric grocery delivery service using the new IVECO Daily EV, the only light commercial EV large enough to meet Farmdrop’s operational needs.

Collaborative R&D
The UK has a beautiful coastline that is integral to many communities but it also provides unique opportunities to engage with the water for commercial and leisure activities. The south coast of the UK has responded to the shift in maritime expectations over the past few years with many new businesses and technology developments for clean and green vessels. The Electric Seaway will provide a charging infrastructure network along the south coast to accelerate the transition to clean maritime. By providing 10 locations with charging installations and including 2 that also embed battery energy storage solutions where grid capacity is a challenge, this network will not only offer a blueprint for future networks but also provide much needed clarity for the whole supply chain. It will offer a standardised approach to e-charging in current and planned fully marinised charging technology and help to overcome the major barrier of limited grid capacity and thus level up infrastructure provision. Chargers installed will be able to provide increased power supply at 10 sites of up to 150 kws including 2 identified sites where battery energy storage will be installed. The World's first Electric Seaway will offer a mix of solutions to meet locations current and future needs, and this will provide a true network of charging, it could be classified as a green corridor but there is no defined route that vessels may take so we believe this Seaway is a flexible and responsive network supporting both commercial and leisure activities. With many ports and harbours already looking at e-vessels for their own operational fleets and private owners wanting to reduce emissions in an environment they enjoy. Aqua superPower will bring together this consortium to deliver the network in two years with the support of Innovate UK and DfT. The Electric Seaway will be an essential part of the sector's ability to develop, build and retrofit vessels incorporating clean propulsion options using batteries with a significant shift forward in a reduction of emissions. Aqua will be supported by the members of the UK Harbour Masters' Association, site locations for energy storage systems in BCP Council and South Hams District Council with leading industry partners in Denchi and across the whole Seaway the expertise from the University of Plymouth ensure environmental impacts and carbon reduction are monitored and fed back to policy makers for future planning.

ZAPINAMO HUBZ for EV Charging

Feasibility Studies
"The ideal solution to EV charging in public spaces will be able to fit around whatever street furniture is there already, have no impact on grid supply, be cheap to install and offer easy relocation in response to changing demand patterns. ZAPINAMO HUBZ is such a solution. It has the potential to fit elegantly around existing street furniture or into a corner of a car park bay, taking up minimum additional space. Each unit is interconnected with others via safe above ground trunking, meaning an EV driver can park anywhere in a ZAPINAMO HUBZ-equipped car park or on-street location. User interfaces will allow them to select a trickle charge, possibly with a delay to take advantage of off-peak pricing or pay premium for a rapid charge from ZAPINAMO HUBZ storage. Above ground trunking eliminates groundworks, making ZAPINAMO HUBZ rapid and inexpensive to install. In this project, Zapinamo have formed a consortium with Gamma Solar Energy Ltd (Gamma) and Devon County Council (DCC). They will work together to better understand the particular challenges of EV use and charging around Devon, namely: current lack of chargepoints; an electricity grid with no spare capacity in the majority of locations; longer journeys than elsewhere due to dispersed population; need to preserve aesthetics of streetscapes; need to maintain pedestrian and vehicle access along streets that are often narrower than UK average. ZAPINAMO will work to adapt HUBZ around these criteria, in close collaboration with DCC . They will also develop other uses for ZAPINAMO HUBZ, potentially as parcel storage/collection, advertising, traffic monitoring or crime prevention via CCTV. They will also further develop potential data based benefits to installers, operators, users and local retailers. These include energy cost reductions, user convenience features, efficacy of supply data and more. Gamma will own and operate infrastructure post-project. They will develop business models that maximise use of clean, local energy and develop flexible pricing models that will boost EV uptake. With its modular design that fits virtually anywhere, easy installation, flexible operation and ability to provide EV charging with minimal grid impact, ZAPINAMO HUBZ, powered by Gamma's solar PV farms, complete the pathway of clean, local energy to clean vehicles."

CHANGING THE WAY WE CHARGE ELECTRIC VEHICLES [EVs], ZAPINAMO is a first of a kind deployable, rapid EV charging system delivering power boosted stored energy. Harvesting from various sources, including renewables and off-grid supplies, it utilises highly sophisticated, but proven, extremely reliable battery technology together with ZAPINAMO power electronics, to provide energy at a point where and when the EV user wants it, even totally off-grid, and at the fastest rate / highest power the EV can take. ZAPINAMO is Power Boosting its way to future proofing EV Charging in an increasingly demanding world with frail Grid infrastructure. WHY DO WE NEED EVs? Electric vehicles are highly beneficial to city air quality. In 2015 over 9,500 premature deaths were attributed to air pollution in London alone costing health services over £3.7bn, with an estimated 40,000 across the UK. Emissions from petrol and diesel vehicles (esp. ‘PM2.5’) are a major contributor to this public health emergency. EVs have had, up until now, a limited impact due mostly to ineffective slow charging infrastructure making longer journeys uncertain causing ‘range anxiety’; ZAPINAMO can help overcome this fear and create confidence in EV use. Slow chargers take many hours to charge a car; that's unpopular with users, businesses and local authorities who are asked to host the chargers, taking up valuable parking spaces. Upgrading slow chargers to rapid charging posts is impractical and costly for local authorities involving sub-station upgrades and associated distruption over a long period of time. Through this FoaK deployment, ZAPINAMO can road-test its revolutionary movable EV charging system with customers, allowing the fastest rapid charge (minutes, not hours) to be available where and when it’s needed. Installation advantages such as same-day deployment and operational cost benefits versus conventional direct from the grid infrastructure will be assessed. Operationally, stored energy allows harvesting during low tariff and clean energy generation periods. If a ZAPINAMO charger appears under-utilised or in the wrong place it can be easily relocated, avoiding costly, disruptive and wasteful network upgrades. If over subscribed, the number of charging outlets and energy storage level can be increased quickly, economically and in small increments (unlike substation upgrades). That's a transformational innovation, allowing more EVs into the most polluted areas where they can make greatest impact on public health.
