Beam is an online exercise platform created to support people with specific health conditions to engage with exercise long term. We have successfully built our product for people with cystic fibrosis (CF), postnatal women and women undergoing the menopause.
Following the huge disruption to healthcare provision worldwide during the Covid-19 pandemic and having been approached by a number of NHS and private healthcare practitioners, we are building out our platform in order to support thousands more people across the UK with health needs to engage in supervised exercise tailored to their needs. Our first offering will be to work with a world renowned cancer centre to provide cancer rehabilitation across the UK through our platform.
Community is important for everyone and our brand prides itself on focussing on this point. We will therefore be running live group classes hosted by a cancer physiotherapist running three times a week to provide the benefits of group exercise classes during this period of isolation. We understand that sometimes we are not able to make classes that we had planned to, or simply do not want to workout in a group - we will have this covered with a bank of specialist and verified on-demand videos to be accessed at any time and as often as required! To help with the difficult journey of undergoing cancer treatment we also have the option for you to join public groups through our platform where you can meet other people going through a similar journey.
That's not all though. We recognise that knowing what exercise to do is daunting and everyone's abilities or desires are different and that what we need is someone we trust helping us along the way. Therefore we will be pioneering "clinic support", not available through any other platform. In this brand new feature, your own oncology team will be able to deliver private exercise classes as often as they can to you and fellow patients from your clinic. _Clinic support_ will include a variety of ways to monitor your health and track activity levels and will include access to an encrypted private messaging system allowing you to seek advice from your team about exercise and rehabilitation so you never feel alone in your journey.
We aim to make a real difference to people with cancer during this difficult time in a way that has never been achieved before.
------------------------
During the course of the original project we will launch Beam Prostate Cancer, providing rehabilitation services and support for people with prostate cancer. The Extension for Impact funding will be invested in improving our current technology platform to make it more scalable and to better meet the NHS governance requirements of different NHS Trusts. This will speed up our time to market of future products to serve other tumour groups and health conditions as well as open up opportunities with more NHS Trusts. This will mean that, before 31st March, 2021, we will be able to launch Beam Breast Cancer (rehabilitation services and support for people with breast cancer) as part of this project.

Feasibility Studies
"Pactster is an online gym for people with specific health conditions - currently focused on cystic fibrosis (CF). CF is a genetic, life-shortening condition affecting over 10,000 people in the UK, with annual costs of £24K+ per patient. Regular exercise helps maintain lung function, improve quality of life and survival. Currently 4% of the UK CF population are subscribed to Pactster and our web-app is being used in 100% of UK CF centres. The CF Trust has purchased an annual license for the past two years providing free access to Pactster to people with CF, their carers and physiotherapists.
We currently offer CF-specific exercise videos and motivational features via a web app. This project will expand our offering by means of a mobile app.
A mobile app will not only improve access to Pactster's current resources but allow us to develop a key feature that has been requested time after time and not achievable via a web-app - downloadable exercise videos.
We have solid evidence for the business need to develop Pactster as a mobile app including:
* Clinical research - feedback from Newcastle NHS Foundation Trust's recent clinical research trial evaluating the usability and impact of Pactster indicated clear need for an app to improve access to video content and ease of function.
* Analytic user data - we have more user traffic from mobile and tablet than desktop (53% vs 47%) however bounce rates for our web app are almost double when accessed via mobile and tablet versus desktop indicating mobile user experience is unsatisfactory. Developing an app with thoughtful design for smaller screens and mobile limitations we believe will reduce bounce rates and increase engagement.
* Direct feedback from current users - we regularly receive feedback from current users with cystic fibrosis and physiotherapists that people need to be able to download content onto their devices for use offline or when internet it too slow to stream video (e.g. in hospital).
* Direct requests for downloadable content for access offline (during hospital stays and when out of home)
* Behaviour-change research indicates that features such as device notifications can play a role in developing positive, habit-forming behaviour
This project will help business growth by widening the positive impact of our current product, develop key features to attract more users, improve health outcomes for people with CF, accelerate revenues through price increases and premium feature sells and accelerated expansion to other health conditions."

Feasibility Studies
"Pactster is a community-based exercise platform for people with specific health conditions. We offer condition-specific exercise videos and community support, including online group exercise, to encourage people to exercise more for better physical and emotional health.
As an initial target market we have chosen cystic fibrosis (CF), a disease affecting over 10,000 people in the UK, with annual costs of at least £24,000/patient. We chose CF due to profound impact regular exercise can have on the management of the disease and the unique barrier they face in not being able to meet in person for fear of cross-infection (meaning group exercise classes are out of the question). In the 12 months since launching our product to the CF market we have had extremely encouraging response from people with the disease (have acquired 3% of the UK market), their carers, clinicians and the wider community both in the UK and beyond.
It's a great start, however one of the key challenges we face is improving exercise adherence and motivating users to do more exercise. To speed up the pace at which we can overcome this challenge and start significantly improving the lives of people with CF we propose a 12 month project to research, design, implement, test and evaluate three technology interventions with the primary aim of increasing the amount of exercise people with CF are doing.
With a team of technology, health and marketing experts, specifically in the field of cystic fibrosis, and backed by advisors and strategic partnerships who will provide support during the project, we are perfectly positioned to conduct a successful and meaningful feasibility study into how technological innovations can be used to increase exercise adherence.
The outcome of this project has the potential to have a powerful impact on the lives of people with CF and as a result reduce costs to the NHS in treating the disease. Moreover, the impact will continue to be felt by people with other health conditions (breast and prostate cancer, HIV and diabetes to name but a few) as we roll out Pactster out across the health sector in the UK and worldwide."
