Movement analysis is a key indicator in the diagnosis and monitoring of MSK conditions. Current methods of ad-hoc in-person assessment and documentation do not capitalise upon the huge potential for big data, precision medicine, or enhanced delivery of high-value care, all of which have the potential to make a huge difference to the patient experience across a range of MSK conditions. Movement analysis typically requires a fixed lab space, expensive calibrated multi-camera motion capture systems and several days of processing by a trained expert, per patient. Because this is cost-prohibitive, clinicians typically rely upon visual estimates, or use basic instruments such as a goniometer or stopwatch to deliver assessments, inform clinical decisions, or provide outcomes for clinical trials. This project will research and develop an accessible, easy-to-use system requiring only a standard device owned by 91% of the UK population. It will enable remote validated clinical movement assessment for earlier diagnosis of frailty, leading to faster and more targeted treatments and ultimately better patient outcomes. The solution will have the potential for use in targeted proactive management of other MSK health and chronic conditions though these will not be the project focus.
